Bakshibazar turns into battle field amid BNP-BCL fight
At least 30 people, including a ruling party MP, were injured in a clash between BNP and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists near Bakshibazar makeshift court following BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appearance in a makeshift court there in two graft cases. Witnesses said the clash broke out around 12:10am when a group of BCL activists had blocked a procession bought out by the BNP men at Fazle Rabbi Hall intersection of Dhaka Medical College Hospital before Khaleda Zia reached the court area. The BCL men along with sticks beat up BNP and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) men, leaving some of them injured. Later, a chase and counter-chase took place between BNP and BCL men, leaving 10-15 more injured. At one stage, miscreants torched a parked private car owned by Chhobi Bishwas, an MP from Netrakona-1, during the melee. The BNP men then hit and injured Chhobi Bishwas and Mymensingh unit Krishak League joint secretary Dulal as they got out of the car. They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Law enforcers charged baton and lobbed several rounds of teargas shells to bring the situation under control. Later, the BNP men took position in front of the DMCH while the BCL men were seen heading towards Dhaka University area. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia reached the makeshift court set up on the Bakshibazar Alia Madrasah playground around 12:25pm amid the clash between the BNP and BCL activists. Khaleda Zia, also a former Prime Minister, went out of the court around 1:15pm. Earlier on December 18, the government appointed Judge Abu Ahmed Jamaddar after transferring Judge Bashudev Roy, who had been dealing with the two corruption cases against Khaleda and eight others following Khaleda’s repeated requests to the High Court. On August 8, 2011, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources. — UNB, Dhaka.
