Crimes inside prisons !
Staff Reporter :
The committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 20 to prepare a report on irregularities and corruption in jails has submitted its report and made 20 recommendations to improve the condition.
Team leader and Additional Secretary of the Home Ministry Shawkat Mostafa submitted the report last week.
Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, another Additional Secretary of the ministry, said that the report was presented in the cabinet meeting last Wednesday.
The probe committee was structured in the wake of corruption and irregularities in the country’s jails. The report says that substandard foods are served among the prisoners, and the financially solvent prisoners manage hospital beds, pretending serious illness, and good accommodation inside the jails in exchange of money.
Sadly, the financially weak prisoners’ complaints are not taken into accounts and they are ill-treated.
Contrary, the listed convicted criminals get crimes dome outside the jails through their agents or hired goons.
A few days ago, some unidentified miscreants shot dead a BNP leader of Hazaribagh Thana Unit. Police inquiry revealed that the order of killing him was given from a prison over cell phone.
Last February, the blueprint of snatching of three militants from Trishal of Mymensingh was prepared in a jail and the order was given as per plan, an intelligence agency said.
The Committee in its report recommended for installing a Mobile Phone Booth for preventing top terrorists and listed criminals from illegal conversations with their bosses and subordinates in cell phone from prisons.
The committee has suggested that the prisoners who are given light punishment should be engaged in work and given wages as done in the western countries.
