Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have found Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) drug while investigating the death of Dhaka University student Hafizur Rahman.
The detectives recovered the drug from a residence in the capital. DB also arrested three private university students from city’s Danmondi and Lalmatia accused of selling the drug on Wednesday night.
The arrested students are identified as Sadman Shakib Lupol and Ashab Wadud Turja of North South University and Adib Asrafh of Independent University,
All three are from well-off families. Two hundred LSD blots worth Taka about six lakh have been seized from them. In a press conference, DMP’s Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akhtar confirmed the matter on Thursday.
He said that two separate groups were opened on the social networking site Facebook. Around 1000 members were active in the group. All of them are involved in the deadly drug LSD. This is the first instance of recovering this hallucinogenic drug in Bangladesh.
According to the DB official, victim Hafizur and his three friends took LSD in the Curzon Hall area on the Dhaka University campus on May 15 night. Under influence of the drug, Hafizur went out from there, hacked himself with a machete. Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College & Hospital (DMCH) where he died under treatment.
It should be noted that this drug is imported from Sweden while payment is made through Paypal, said DB sources adding that they seized 200 strips of LSD. They would sell each LSD at Taka 3,000.
LSD was first synthesized in 1938. It is synthetically made from lysergic acid, which is found in ergot, a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. It is so potent its doses tend to be in the microgram (mcg) range.
“It’s effects, often called a “trip”, can be stimulating, pleasurable, and mind-altering or it can lead to an unpleasant, sometimes terrifying experience called a “bad trip”,” according to the website. LSD is usually found on the streets in various forms, such as blotter paper, tablet or capsule form, liquid or cube form.
