Seven arrested AL leader succumbs to injuries in city

An Awami League (AL) leader, who was injured in a clash between the supporters of Haji Mohammad Selim MP, and former lawmaker Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin over occupying the city’s Azimpur Kitchen Market on September 12, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday morning. The deceased was identified as Shahabuddin Sabu, 45.
A special team of law enforcers arrested seven per sons, including a woman in the case early Sunday. The arrested persons have been identified as Md Mafiz Alam, Mohammad Alam Mia, Mohammad Babu, Md Masum Talukder, Md Anwar Hossain, Md Alamgir Sheikh and Brishti Akter, police said.
Quoting the locals, Lalbagh Police Station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohibullah confirmed the matter and said that 4 to 5 persons chopped Sabu during the clash around 12:30 noon, leaving him critically injured on Friday. He was rushed to the DMCH where he succumbed to injuries around 7:00am on Sunday. Following the incident, Sabu’s wife Shahin Akhter on Saturday lodged a case against the 22 people, including Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, with the Lalbagh Police Station on the charge of killing Sabu, the police official said. Anwar Hossain Akash, a witness of the incident, said that the inhabitant of the area have been suffering insecure due to a tense atmosphere.
