With the installation of 18th span of 6.15-km Padma Bridge, a total of 2,700 metres of the country’s largest structure is now visible.
It was brought by Tian-E crane near pillar No 17-18 at Jajira point from Mawa construction yard-1 at noon, said Deputy Assistant Engineer of Padma Bridge Project Humayun Kabir on Wednesday.
The span was placed on the 17th and 18th pillars within the 15 days after the 17th span was installed.
The construction work of the long-cherished Padma Bridge started in December, 2015 and the first span (superstructure) among the 41 was installed on September 30, 2017.
The construction of railway and road over the bridge is going on in full swing. The trains will run through the lower deck, while the road will be on the upper level of the bridge. The bridge will have 41 spans, each 150 metres long.
When the construction of the Padma Bridge is completed, the capital will be directly connected with 21 southern districts through road and railways.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on 17 October said the construction work on the Padma Bridge will be completed by June 2021.
