Auto-fine system begins on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway

The Highway Police will introduce an AI-powered “auto-fine system” on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway from August 18, automatically detecting traffic violations and notifying vehicle owners for payment.

The technology-driven initiative aims to improve road safety, reduce traffic violations and bring greater discipline to one of the country’s major highways.

The new system will use AI-powered cameras to automatically detect offences including speeding, illegal parking and driving against traffic, the Highway Police said. Additional DIG (Media) Muntasirul Islam disclosed the initiative on Saturday.

Once a violation is detected, details of the case will be sent by SMS to the registered vehicle owner. The owner will then be able to pay the fine through authorised mobile financial services, including bKash and Nagad. Muntasirul Islam said the technology-based system would make traffic enforcement faster, more transparent and accurate.

The initiative is also expected to help reduce road accidents and improve traffic discipline along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

By automating the detection and notification process, the Highway Police aims to strengthen enforcement against common road violations while reducing reliance on manual monitoring.

The Highway Police has urged passengers, transport owners, workers’ leaders and other stakeholders to cooperate with the new system.

The auto-fine mechanism will come into operation on August 18 as part of broader efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance with traffic rules.
