BIWTA’s spl service for Eid passengers

Sadarghat has become one of the most significant entrance and exit points of Dhaka through out the year. About 40 to 50 lakh passengers usually travel by launches to reach homes to celebrate two Eids with their relatives. But the journey is not sometime safe from accidents due to jam-packed passengers and feeble launches. Besides, a cycle is very tempt to take advantages during the pressure by making fit some unfits and old launches during Eid journey.
It is noted that workers of some 30 dockyards in
and around Keraniganj are passing a busy period in their respective dockyards in refurbishing the old and unfit launches to earn extra money ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
While visiting different dockyards including Rahman Dockyard, Baby Shaheb Dockyard in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital, found that a number of launches are being given facelifts. The workers are busy in repairing and refurbishing launches and adding new cabins to the launch to deal the excessive pressure of passengers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Meanwhile, this year Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) assured that they would arrange special service from the last week of the May.
“We are fully prepared for safe journey and that is why we had already assembled 215 launches to serve the passengers of southern part of the country, Said Alamgir Kabir, Joint Director of Rever Security and Traffic Management Division of Dhaka River Port, Sadarghat, Dhaka.
He further said, many people along with their families will start for their village homes from May 30, and when launch owners seek support from the BIWTA in this regard, it will be given all-out support to them.
If any unexpected storm strikes during the journey what will be done as primitive steps, Alamgir Kabir said’ we generally analyze the weather before leaving any launch terminal. Besides, if there is probability of facing any powerful storm in the river we don’t allow any water vessels leaving from Sadarghat.
If we get warning-1 from the metrological office, we generally warn all sorts of water vessels, during warning 2 we say not to allow any launches below 65 fit but during the warning number-3 we post phone all sorts of water vessels in waterway, he added.
On this issue, Secretary General of Bangladesh Inland Waterway Passengers Transportation Association Siddqur Rhaman Patwari said to media that a total of 220 launches and six more streamers will sail in the Dhaka-Barishal Route during Eid journey.
Recently some launches faced unexpected incidents with blackheed in the southern part of the country at night, in this prospect, talking with Dipety Director of BIWTA of Southern part Azmal Huda Mithu told that Blackheed is forbidden at night but some time they break the law but we have taken some stern initiatives for baning it at least 14 days including first seven days ahead of Eid and later.
