Syndicates play tricks to keep rawhide prices at lowest level
President of Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants’ Association has admitted that the price level was lowest in the last several years. But what is significant that around 20-25 lakh more cow, goat and others were slaughtered this year due to huge availability of cattle. The government on August 10 announced the prices of rawhides of animals setting the highest price at Tk 50 a square feet for cowhide and Tk 20 a square feet for goatskin, which were six-year low. Commerce Minister had set the prices following a meeting with leaders of Bangladesh Tanners’ Association, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters’ Association and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants’ Association in the capital.
The seasonal rawhide buyers had also faced obstacles in each district across the country. Usually a good number of people donate the rawhides to poor people or local masques and madrasas which later sell it to raise their fund. This year it was a total misfortune for them. The social media networks were flooded with comments over the low prices. Some of them asked, if a cowhide is sold at Tka 300 than why we should buy a pair of shoes at Taka 5000 from Apex or other companies?
Wholesalers and the tannery owners each year show different excuses for the low price of rawhides and animal skin. It cannot be accepted anymore. We are surprised see no monitoring of government in this regard.
