Gold price surge lifts BB’s reserve value

The financial value of gold held in Bangladesh Bank (BB) reserves increased by Tk 2,422.52 crore in the 2025-26 fiscal year as global gold prices rose, although the volume of gold held by the central bank remained unchanged.

According to Bangladesh Bank’s audit report for FY2025-26, the central bank held 459,163.52 troy ounces of gold at the end of FY2024-25. The amount remained the same at the end of the last fiscal year.

The total financial value of the gold stood at Tk 11,014.10 crore at the end of FY2024-25. It rose to Tk 13,436.62 crore at the end of FY2025-26.

Thus, despite no change in the quantity of gold held, its value increased by around Tk 2,422.52 crore due to the rise in global gold prices.

In terms of weight, Bangladesh Bank currently holds around 14,278 kilograms of gold, with an estimated financial value of Tk 13,436 crore.

A large portion of the gold is stored with the Bank of England, while the remainder is kept at several international banks and in Bangladesh Bank’s own vaults.

The value of Bangladesh Bank’s gold reserves fluctuates with changes in international gold prices. The value is determined at the end of each fiscal year based on prevailing international market prices.

The increase in global gold prices during the last fiscal year therefore resulted in a corresponding rise in the value of the central bank’s gold holdings.
