Electricity bill disorder causing sufferings to Bandarban consumers

The consumers have been suffering for electricity bill disorder for a long time .
They are getting extremely annoyed due to payment of extra amount as electricity bill every month.
Centring this bill disorder, they are locked in altercation with the officials and staff of Bandarban Power Department very often.
It was known that due to the bill disorder, one consumer is paying the bill of another while some are paying extra amount despite consuming less power.
On Monday at 12pm, a group of consumers besieged some Power Department officials and staff in front of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) as they came to snap the power connection of the DPHE and asked them about the crisis. Finding journalists nearby, they presented different problems of the department.
Cashier at local DPHE Aminul Haque alleged, “Extra bill is charged against the DPHE every month, while around 5,000 units of extra bill have remained arrear. Though we complained about the bill disorder to the authority concerned, there was no solution. Now, our power connection has been snapped. It is a matter of regret that the power connection of a government office has been snapped this way.”
A consumer Hanif Sarker from Battali Para in the town said, “Though my metre number is 14474945, I am paying the bill against the metre number 214111218 per month.” At that time, the journalists found the truth of the allegation.
At the same time, Proprietor of Feast Restaurant in the town Shahadat-ur-Rahman expressed with anger, “I am being harassed from March last due to the bill disorder. Every month, I am paying extra bill and incurring economic loss. So far, extra bill worth about Tk 35,000 has been charged. Though I complained in this connection, there was no solution. In the meantime, the power connection of my business establishment has been snapped.”
While asked about the allegation at that time, Assistant Engineer Rezwan Ferdous said, “I am working as per the instruction of the authority. If there is any complaint, it can be informed to them.”
During that time, some people also gathered around the Power Department office. After going there, the journalists met a consumer Nannu Sarker who said, “I am not getting any bill against my metre for the last few months. I do not know what is waiting for me in future.”
Another consumer Afsan Karim said, “I am suffering for whimsical bill issued by the local power department.”
While asked, Executive Engineer of the department Ching Hla Mong said, “There is manpower crisis at the department.
There is no residential office in the upazila headquarters. The consumers have to go to the main office in the district headquarters to solve any problem. Due to the manpower crisis, there may be some inconsistency in the bills. But, we try to solve the problem if we get any complaint.”
While asked about the negligence of metre readers, he said that steps would be taken if any complaint is found against any of them. In the meantime, one metre reader has been temporarily suspended, he informed. He, however, requested the consumers to contact with the executive engineer if there is any problem.
