BD stand to help overcome climate change impact: EU

Bangladesh’s high-profile climate diplomacy initiatives in the forthcoming UN Climate Change Summit scheduled for September this year in New York can play an effective role in overcoming the growing vulnerable warming impacts in the country, expects EU commissioner for Climate Change.
The EU Commissioner, Connie Hedegaard, expressed this expectation during a meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Ministder AH Mahmood Ali in Brussels recently.
The minister met the EU’s climate change boss in
the back drop of its recent report which portrayed the horrifying state of the climate vulnerable countries including Bangladesh.
“We expect Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to use her high-profile climate diplomacy to play an effective role in the climate change summit conveyed by the UN Secretary General,” said Connie Hedegaard.
Mahmood Ali underscored the need for EU’s continued support and cooperation for Bangladesh and other vulnerable countries under its Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA).
Connie Hedegaard assured Bangladesh that the EU would work towards an ambitious emission reduction target for the 28-member bloc in a time bound manner. She also mentioned her visit to Bangladesh in 2010 and praised some of the innovative climate change adaptation work she has seen during the visit.
The foreign minister also met chair of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Elmer Brok, MEP on Wednesday and discussed issues concerning the post-election political situation and reform of labour rights and safety standards in the RMG sector, and Bangladesh-EU relations.
