184 arrested in joint drives

Chittagong District Police arrested 184 people including 4 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), conducting special drives at different upazilas of the district on Tuesday night.
The law enforcers also recovered one Single Barrel Gun, 2 cartridges, 2,000 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets and 108 litres liquor during the night-long drives.
Mohammad Naimul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district police said that several teams of police conducted the drives in different upazilas of the district on Tuesday night and rounded up 184 people.
One held with huge fake notes : Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested an alleged member of currency forgery gang with huge fake notes from city’s Kazirhat area of Mohora under Chandgaon thana in the early hour on Wednesday.
Chandgaon thana police also recovered a computer, printer, fake notes making ink and paper from his possession.
The arrestee was identified as Shorov Biswas, 25, hailed from Boalkhali upazila of the district.
Police arrested Shorov from Kazirhat area of Mohora under Chandgaon thana around 1.30 am and recovered 1030 counterfeit notes of Tk 100 denomination each from his possession.
Police conducted a drive at his office at Charrangamatia area and recovered the fake notes of Tk 100 denomination and fake notes making instruments. The arrestee in preliminary interrogation confessed that he had long been involved in collecting the counterfeit notes with his gang.
A case was filed in this connection.
12 Shibir men held with weapons from CU hall: The authority of Chittagong University (CU) detained at least 12 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) including president of Shaheed Abdur Rab Hall unit of ICS from the university dormitory yesterday afternoon.
Huge jihadi books and sharp weapons were also recovered from the dormitory during the raid.
Acting on secret information, CU administration along with police conducted a raid at the Shibir-dominated dormitory at around 3.30pm and detained them, said CU assistant proctor Anowar Chowdhury.
“The raid was prompted on the basis of information that the ICS leaders and activists were holding a secret meeting for planning sabotage acts”, he said adding that the raid was still on till filing of this report.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari police station Mohammad Ismail said police recovered jihadi books and country-made weapons from the dormitory during the drive.”Legal actions will be taken against the detainees after investigation,” the OC added.
