Staff Reporter :

Nahid Islam, the Information and Broadcasting Adviser to the interim government, has stated that individuals, including journalists, poets, and cultural figures, who were involved in fascism or incited genocide, will be brought to justice as soon as possible.

Addressing questions from journalists after a meeting with newly elected members of the Film Censor Board and Jury Board at the secretariat on Wednesday, Islam emphasised that no one would be immune to the law, regardless of their profession.

He said, “No one will be able to escape the reach of the law simply because they are a journalist, cultural figure, or poet. Those who were involved in promoting fascism, legitimising it, or creating public opinion through their writings and actions, and those who instigated genocide, must be brought to justice.”

When asked about ongoing murder cases involving journalists, Nahid Islam clarified that these cases were not being initiated by the government but by the people.

He added, “We have given instructions to ensure that these cases are reviewed and investigated as soon as possible. If there is no evidence against anyone, the case will be dismissed.”

The Information Adviser also mentioned his recent discussions with representatives of the Press Club and the Secretariat Journalist Forum. He assured that if any journalist falls victim to personal enmity, they could provide information to the Ministry of Information for further action.

Nahid Islam further commented on the spread of rumours via social media platforms, saying, “We are engaging with various stakeholders and the media to improve fact-checking efforts. We are exploring ways to strengthen these measures.”

In response to a question regarding the temporary magisterial powers granted to the army, Islam explained that the army had been given executive authority to help normalise the law and order situation. “This is a temporary measure, and it will be in place for only two months,” he stated.
