As many as 209 inmates have reportedly escaped from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
The escape attempt resulted in deaths of six inmates, who were shot by security personnel.
Senior Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala confirmed the incident on Wednesday afternoon, adding, “The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, when inmates inside the high-security central prison staged a rebellion.”
At that time, some prisoners attempted to break out of prison. As the guards tried to bring the chaos under control, they attacked them. Some inmates broke through walls, some scaled prison walls, and others used electric pipes to assault jail guards in their bid to escape, said superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala.
Eventually, army was called in to launch a commando operation to quell the uprising. Despite their efforts, 209 inmates managed to escape by scaling walls.

Bodies of the deceased were sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue in Gazipur for autopsy and identities of them will be disclosed later, the jail official added.
