Public Varsity teachers demonstrate demanding independent pay scale
Teachers of the country’s public universities have staged demonstrations at their respective universities have to press home their several demands, including an independent pay scale for them.
They abstained from work, staged sit-in and carried out a mass signature programmes from 10am to 1pm to realise their demands that also include reviewing the proposed 8th national pay scale, and protesting their disgracefulness in the proposed pay scale on Sunday.
Earlier, the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers announced to observe the programme every Sunday to press for their demands.
Teachers of Dhaka University observed the programme in front of DU Teachers’ Association (Duta) office on the campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Duta president Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, also president of the federation, threatened to go on a strong movement if their demands are not met.
The DU teachers also held a rally on the campus where many DU as well as other universities took part.
Similar programmes were observed in other public universities, including Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University (HMDSTU) and Rajshahi University.
Addressing the gathering at HMDSTU, its Vice-chancellor Prof Ruhul Amin said the demands of the teacher community are not illogical and it is a must to evaluate them in order to introduce a knowledge-based education system.
Terming the proposed 8th national pay scale disgraceful for teachers, the speakers at the RU programme said the status of teachers is lowered by two steps in the proposed pay scale in comparison to the seventh one.
The speakers also threatened to continue their work abstention programme wearing black badges on every Sunday until the authorities concerned take necessary steps in this regard.
