Bullet-hit baby not yet out of danger

The condition of the newborn baby, who sustained bullet injuries while in the womb of her mother during gun fight between rival BCL men, deteriorated on Thursday at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
The doctor said the baby is not still out of danger.
“The baby is suffering from high-scale jaundice problem after the birth. She has been shifted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). She also sustained low-level hemoglobin problem and the rate is 50,000 in stead of required rate 150,000,” Professor Abid Hossain Mollah, Head of the Paediatric Department at DMCH, told The New Nation on Thursday. Prof Abid feared that the baby might lose sight of her right eye as a result of the injuries.
Meanwhile, her mother Nazma Begum was broight to DMCH along with her husband Bachchu Bhuiyan.
Earlier, Nazama was released from Magura Sadar General Hospital in the morning.
The board of the doctors earlier suggested the relatives of the baby to bring the mother of the baby as she urgently needed breast feeding and mother care.  
Dr Kaniz Hasina of the department overseeing the treatment of the infant said, as part of this treatment, an eye specialist of the hospital has examined the baby. Though nothing can be said yet about the condition of the baby’s right eye, the specialist said she might lose sight in that eye.
Kaniz Hasina said, “The baby’s lungs and heart are unhurt, but there is a risk of infection.”
It may be noted that the baby was born after a four-hour long caesarean operation on her mother at Magura General Hospital on Friday night.
The newborn received bullet injuries when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during an attack by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) faction in Magura district on Friday afternoon.
The incident took place when pro-ruling party activists Azibar Sheikh and Mohammad Ali along with several of their followers attacked Kamrul Bhuiyan and his relatives. Nazma is the wife of Kamrul’s elder brother, Bachhu Bhuiyan.
Police and local sources said there is a long-standing feud between Kamrul and Azibar in Magura town.
Kamrul’s uncle Momin Bhuiyan, 65, who was injured by the gunshots and bomb splinters, died at Magura General Hospital on Friday.
Superintendent of Magura police AKM Ehsan Ullah said that two teams of police were working to arrest the accused.
