Ctg satisfied over upholding SQ Chy death sentence

The people of Chittagong especially Freedom fighters, Gonojagaran Mancha, members of martyred families and prosecution witnesses , on Wednesday expressed satisfaction over confirming the death sentence awarded to BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for his crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971.
The victims in the Good Hills torture cell of the Pakistani collaborators were in tears of happiness hearing the verdict when the four-member appellate bench of Supreme Court (SC) delivered the final verdict that has confirmed the death penalty of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) -1.
Businessman Mohammad Salim Ullah, who was brutally tortured by SQ Chowdhury at his torture cell at Goods Hill during 1971, could not help but cried out in immense contentment over the verdict.
With tears rolling down, Salim Ullah said the departed souls of the victims of torture would rest in peace after the verdict.
“I have been crying for the last 43 years but there are difference in the tears of the past and that of today”, he said adding “I have been waiting for this day for 43 years bearing the pain and sufferings of torture”. He commented that at last the truth has won with handing down of the death penalty of SQ Chowdhury by the appellate division.
Another witness Sheikh Mohammad Jahangir whose father and brother were kidnapped and killed by Pakistani occupation forces also hailed the judgment saying it has cleansed the guilt of 1971. Expressing the satisfaction for confirming the verdict by the appellate division another witness Kazi Nurul Absar urged the government to turn the then torture cell ‘Goods Hill’ into Muktijududdah Museum.
Prafullah Ranzan Singha, whose father, was brutally killed by the Pakistani collaborators during 1971 also expressed satisfaction over upholding the verdict of crime tribunal by the Supreme Court.
Prafullah Ranzan Singha is the son of Philanthropist and founder of herbal medicine, “Kundeswahari”, Principal Shaheed Natun Chandra Singha. Prafullah Ranzan Singha said he along with the people of the country was waiting for this verdict. “I am satisfied over the verdict and my satisfaction will be fulfilled through execution of the verdict”, he added.
Meanwhile, activists of different political parties and cultural organizations today brought out jubilant processions over confirmation of the death sentence of SQ Chowdhury.
Soon after the four-member appellate division bench of Supreme Court delivered the final verdict that has confirmed the death penalty of ICT-1 verdict, hundreds of people brought out processions and distributed sweets in different parts of the city and the district.
Welcoming the verdict, Gonojagoron Mancha in Chittagong also brought out procession from the Chittagong Press Club premises that ended at Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar after parading different city streets ignoring the downpour.
Paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, the Gonojagoron Mancha activists placed wreaths at the Shaeed Minar and held a rally there.
Addressing the rally they said the rule of law has been established in the country trough the verdict.
They also demanded quick execution of the verdict to free the nation of the stigma. Coordinator of Gonojagoron Mancha in Chittagong Sharif Chowhan said the verdict fulfilled the mass expectation. He urged the government to execute the verdicts of all war criminals as soon as possible. Welcoming the ICT verdict Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its front organizations also brought out processions in different parts of the city.
The leaders and activists of the party gathered at Darul Fazal Market party office and held a rally there.
Addressing the rally they thanked the Supreme Court for fulfilling the nation’s expectation through confirming the death sentence to a top war criminal and BNP leader SQ Chowdhury.
People of Raozan Upazila, the birth place of SQ Chowdhury, hailed the judgment saying it has cleansed the guilt of Raozan, the native place of anti-British movement hero Surya Sen.
People of Kundeshwari, Jagatmallpara and Unshattarpara, witnesses of the 1971 genocide, brought out triumphant procession and gathered at Raozan Sadar where they held a short rally.
Expressing satisfaction over upholding the verdict, they urged the government to execute the verdict as soon as possible.
The local units of AL and its student wing Chattra League also brought out processions in the area after the verdict. Md Ismail, a freedom fighter said that many Hindu families as well as families of freedom fighters had to leave the area after 1975 fearing SQ Chowdhury’s atrocities.
“Salauddin Quader’s role in 1971 is a shame for Raozan- residents. He was an extreme Hindu-hater,” freedom fighter Shafiqul Anwar of Raozan’s Mohammadpur told journalists.
Shafiqul Islam, president of Awami League’s Raozan unit said Raozan’s pride of being the native place of the anti-British hero Surya Sen has somewhat been overshadowed by the misdeeds of SQ Chowdhury.
