Hasan sets records, surpasses his own benchmarks

Continuing his stellar form in Test cricket, Hasan Mahmud has achieved a five-wicket haul for the fifth time in his career.

His performance helped Bangladesh stage a comeback on the second day of the second and final Test against the West Indies at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Hasan finished with figures of 6 for 90 from 24 overs.

Hasan claimed five of his wickets during the morning session yesterday, including the crucial scalp of centurion Jangoo.

Following the West Indies’ dominance on the opening day, the pacer provided a vital breakthrough for Bangladesh.

Jangoo, who was unbeaten on 111 overnight, was bowled out by Hasan after facing 212 deliveries.

The West Indies batter had opted to leave the delivery, but the ball went on to shatter his off-stump.

Hasan struck again with the very next ball, dismissing Roston Chase, who was caught behind the stumps.

He even had a chance for a hat-trick, but debutant Joshua Bishop survived after successfully reviewing an on-field LBW decision.

Shortly after, just before the lunch break, wicketkeeper Litton Das contributed to Hasan’s five-wicket haul by executing a brilliant stumping to dismiss Justin Greaves.

This marks Hasan’s fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, making him the most successful Bangladeshi pacer in terms of such achievements.

He has surpassed Shahadat Hossain, who recorded four five-wicket hauls in 38 Tests.

This is also Hasan’s first five-wicket haul on home soil in his 19-Test career.

Previously, Hasan had taken five-wicket hauls against Pakistan in Rawalpindi (2024), India in Chennai (September 2024), Australia in Darwin (August 2024), and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi (last month).

He also claimed a hat-trick during the match in Abu Dhabi.

This performance by Hasan has proven to be of immense importance for Bangladesh.

On the first day, after Taskin Ahmed claimed two early wickets, Bangladesh managed to take only one more wicket across the final two sessions.

West Indies had been in a strong position the previous day. Jangoo remained unbeaten on a century, while Greaves had also settled in well at the other end.

However, a brilliant spell of bowling from Hasan with the new ball shifted the momentum of the match.
