204 bank accounts under NBR scanner
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has moved to identify, freeze and scrutinise the bank accounts of 204 individuals and business entities over allegations of financing activities aimed at creating unrest in the garment sector.
Two intelligence units of the NBR have sent instructions to banks and financial institutions across the country to obtain details of the accounts concerned.
NBR officials said 40 to 50 groups had been formed on social media to incite unrest in the garment sector. Intelligence agencies have identified 200 to 250 people linked to these groups.
According to the officials, some of those involved allegedly received financial support through mobile financial services, while others were given cash.
The NBR has sought detailed bank statements to trace the sources of the funds and examine the nature of the transactions.
Most of those whose accounts are being scrutinised are reportedly linked to the ousted Awami League government, NBR officials said. The list includes former ministers, former members of parliament and influential businesspeople, as well as several members of their families.
The political figures named on the list include Bahauddin Nasim, Salman F Rahman, Abdus Salam Murshedy, Tipu Munshi, Shahriar Alam, Nasrul Hamid and Tajul Islam.
The businesspeople include Faizur Rahman Badal of Tusuka Group, Abdus Salam of Well Group, Khasru Chowdhury of Nipa Group and AKM Mosharraf Hossain of Standard Group. Former BGMEA president S M Mannan Kochi is also on the list.
Some of the people named are in prison, while others are reportedly on the run.
A senior NBR official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Based on information provided by some government agencies, we have instructed banks to identify and freeze the bank accounts of the people concerned.”
“We have also sought transaction details from several other organisations. These individuals and organisations are alleged to have financed activities aimed at destabilising the garment sector.
This initiative has been taken to verify the allegations, trace the sources of the funds and examine the nature of the transactions,” the official added.
