BCB announces women’s squad for Emerging Nations T20 Trophy

Players of Bangladesh women's cricket team celebrate after taking a wicket of their opponent team recently.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 Emerging Nations Trophy, excluding pacer Marufa Akter. Marufa Akter was not included due to an injury to her right ankle.

Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter will lead the Bangladesh side in the upcoming tournament, with Sobhana Mostary serving as her deputy.

This tournament marks the beginning of Nahida’s tenure as Bangladesh’s T20 captain. Nigar Sultana Joty stepped down from the T20I captaincy for poor performance of Bangladesh women’s cricket team in the Asian Games last September.

There are three changes from the squad that participated in the Asian Games. Batter Sathi Rani, spinner Jannatul Ferdous Sumona, and pace-bowling all-rounder Disha Biswas have been called up, replacing Marufa Akter, Sultana Khatun, and Sharmin Sultana.

Sathi returns to the T20 squad after a two-year absence, while Sumona returns after a year and a half. Disha is yet to make her T20 debut.

The second edition of the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy is set to begin on November 12 in Ajman, United Arab Emirates.

Ten teams are participating in this year’s tournament. Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Zimbabwe are in Group-B, while hosts the UAE, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea are in Group-A.

Bangladesh will start their campaign against Pakistan on the tournament’s opening day. They will subsequently face Zimbabwe on November 13, the Netherlands on November 16, and Thailand on November 18.

The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage. From that stage, the two best-performing teams will compete in the final on November 25. Bangladesh will depart for the UAE on November 10.

Bangladesh squad: Nahida Akter (Captain), Sobhana Mostary (Vice-Captain), Nigar Sultana Joty, Sharmin Akter, Shorna Akter, Ritu Moni, Dilara Akter, Rabeya Khan, Disha Biswas, Fariha Islam, Fahima Khatun, Juairiya Ferdous, Jannatul Ferdous, Sanjida Akter and Sathi Rani.
