CoU student found dead at husband’s home
A female student of Comilla University (CoU) was found dead at her husband’s rented house in Narayanganj on Saturday night, with police suspecting suicide and detaining her husband for questioning.
The deceased, Farzana Islam, was a postgraduate student of the university’s Department of Pharmacy. Police recovered her body from the house in the Signboard area under Fatullah Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Gazi Sumon Mahtab of Fatullah Police Station said police found Farzana hanging when they reached the scene.
Her husband has been taken into custody for questioning. At first glance, it appears to be a case of suicide,” he said, adding that the cause of death would be confirmed after the autopsy report.
Farzana’s brother, Ariful Islam, alleged that she had faced abuse over various issues since marrying Nazmul Islam, a senior student of the same department, around three years ago.
“Initially, Nazmul was unemployed. After getting a job, his financial demands increased. At one point, he began pressuring Farzana for money, alongside the alleged abuse,” Ariful said.
He said he had spoken to his sister on the evening of the incident and noticed nothing unusual in their conversation.
“Between 10:00pm and 10:30pm, I received a phone call informing me of her death,” he said.
Farzana belonged to the 2019–20 undergraduate batch and the 2024–25 postgraduate batch of the Pharmacy Department. Nazmul was a former student of the same department from the 2016–17 session.
Sohanul Islam Sarkar, vice-president of the CoU Pharmacy Department Society, said the department was deeply saddened by Farzana’s death.
“We demand a fair and impartial investigation to uncover the truth and ensure the highest punishment for those responsible under the law,” he said.
Police said no case had been filed over the incident as of the latest update.
