Deceit in the name of treatment in Barishal
A man named Alimul Islam (48) accused of defrauding hundreds of ordinary people under the guise of providing medical treatment.
For nearly 15 years, Alimul had been “treating” patients across various parts of Barishal district, claiming to diagnose illnesses using a laptop and a specialized device.
According to his national identification card, the fraudster and fake doctor, Alimul Islam, is the son of Abdul Ali Howlader from the Baherghat area of Wzirpur Upazila under Barishal district.
His activities finally came to an end on Sunday (18 October)night, when he was caught by a mobile court operated by the Upazila administration while attending to a patient at a pharmacy near the College Gate in Babuganj Upazila of Barishal district.
The mobile court fined Alimul Islam 50,000 Taka and confiscated his medical equipment and documents.
According to the upazila administration, Alimul failed to produce any valid documentation to prove his qualifications as a physician. Saleha Begum was seeking treatment for eye problems and headaches.
Through an intermediary, she learned of a “doctor” near the College Gate area in Babuganj Upazila of Barishaldistrict, who claimed to diagnose and treat all kinds of illnesses using a special device.
Trusting this information, she visited the individual and underwent a diagnostic procedure that involved placing her hand on a device.
Later, however, she discovered that the person-who posed as a doctor-lacked both the necessary qualifications and authentic credentials.
According to the administration and other sources, Alimul Islam had long been seeing patients in various areas, including Barishal Sadar, Wazirpur, and Babuganj Upazila.
He was known to regularly attend to patients at Madhabpasha Bazar and near the Babuganj Degree College gate.
On his prescriptions, he used the prefix “Dr.” before his name, posing as a qualified physician. His prescriptions also contained claims of holding an MBEH (India) degree and a DMF (Dhaka), along with assertions that he had received training at the NRS Medical College in Kolkata.
Furthermore, he claimed to be an expert in treating internal medicine, dermatological conditions, sexual health issues, and allergies.
