Cabinet nods Secretariat relocation
The Cabinet has approved a proposal to relocate the Bangladesh Secretariat to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
A new Secretariat complex will be constructed on the grounds of the former trade fair (Baniyo Mela) site, and government offices will be shifted there. According to the plan, the Secretariat is set to begin operations at the new location in 2029.
The proposal was approved during a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday afternoon (October 18) at the Secretariat, presided over by the Prime Minister. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani announced the decision at a press briefing following the meeting.
Currently, the Bangladesh Secretariat is located on Abdul Gani Road in the capital. The initiative to relocate it to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar involves the construction of a new complex.
Prior to this, the government had reached an in-principle decision to relocate the Secretariat during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Public Works, the Public Works Department, and the Department of Architecture were present at that meeting, which took place at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The very next day, the Ministry of Public Works sent a letter to the Planning Commission requesting the inclusion of the proposed relocation project in the Annual Development Programme (ADP).
According to the government’s plan, once the necessary infrastructure is constructed at the new site, the Secretariat will commence its operations from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in 2029.
