Pontoon damaged by hit of water transport at Barisal Port

Pontoon and different structures at Barisal River Port were severely damaged due to hit of water transport during berthing on Tuesday afternoon.
Abul Bashar Majumdar, Deputy Director, River Safety and Traffic of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority at Barisal , said Dhaka bound triple-deck launch MV Kirtankhola-2 hit the pontoon during anchoring a the port on Tuesday afternoon.
Although passengers waiting on the pontoon luckily saved, but the pontoon and some other structures of the port were severely damaged, the BIWTA official said.
Nurul Islam, master of MV Kirtankhola-2, claimed that to load passengers under regular scheduled trip when they reach near river port, found that vessels of special trip taking possessions created obstacle on way of there berthing.
So after long waiting at mid-river when they tried to anchor at the port after 3:00 PM Tuesday some parts of the pontoon sustained minor damages, the master of the vessel claimed.
However, Mustafizur Rahman, Barisal River Port Officer, explained that during Eid rush there was no reserved space for vessels of regular or special trips and vessel could anchor on first comes, first placing basis. So explanation of the master of the vessel could not be acceptable.
The pontoons of Barisal port only could handle berthing of vessels up to 350 tons, but MV Kirtankhola-2 was heavier than that capacity and anchored without controlling speed.
