BLAST demands justice over journo Alif’s killing
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) has demanded a swift and impartial investigation into the killing of journalist Lutfuzzaman Alif Fakir in Netrokona, calling for those responsible to be brought to justice and effective legal measures to ensure journalists’ safety.
In a statement issued on Saturday (17 October), the rights organisation expressed deep concern over the killing and urged the authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify everyone involved and ensure accountability.
According to media reports, Alif, 44, was shot dead by two young men on Thursday night after leaving a tea shop in the Telnjia area of Durgapur upazila in Netrokona.
Alif worked as the Netrokona correspondent for the online news channel Rupashi Bangla. He also operated a Facebook page titled “Detective Article”, where he regularly reported on alleged irregularities, criminal activities and other local issues. The journalist had previously been attacked by unidentified assailants on 10 November 2025, raising concerns about threats to his personal safety.
BLAST stressed that journalists must be able to gather information, investigate wrongdoing and publish news without fear of violence, intimidation or retaliation.
The organisation called on the authorities to create a safe and secure environment for media professionals to perform their duties independently.
It also urged the government to introduce effective legislation and protective measures to safeguard journalists from violence and threats while carrying out their professional responsibilities.
Highlighting the fundamental right to life, BLAST said every killing must be investigated fairly and independently, regardless of whether the motive involves professional activities, personal disputes or other circumstances.
The organisation emphasised that identifying and prosecuting those responsible was essential to ensuring justice and preventing similar incidents.
BLAST reiterated its demand for a transparent investigation into Alif’s killing and appropriate legal action against all those found responsible.
The rights group also called for stronger institutional measures to protect journalists and uphold press freedom, stressing that media professionals should be able to carry out their work without facing threats to their lives or personal security.
