Thakurgaon UNO pledges steps to protect brood fish
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Golam Rabbani Sardar has pledged to take necessary measures to protect indigenous brood fish at the Kadamtali Fish Sanctuary on the Tangon River in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon district.
He made the assurance during an inspection of the sanctuary on Thursday following a report published in The Daily New Nation highlighting a shortage of water and natural food at the site.
The sanctuary has become significantly shallower due to silt accumulation, reducing the availability of natural food and threatening the habitat and movement of thousands of indigenous brood fish, according to local sources.
During the visit, the UNO reviewed the sanctuary’s condition and discussed the need to ensure a safe habitat for the fish. He assured those concerned that appropriate steps would be taken to protect the brood fish.
Pirganj Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Ayesha Akter was present during the inspection.
Others attending included Prabhat Samir Shahjahan Alam, former president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh’s (CPB) Pirganj upazila branch; Pirganj Press Club General Secretary Nasrate Khoda Rana; and Kadamtali Fish Sanctuary President Fazlul Karim, General Secretary Jahirul Islam and Vice-President Entajul Haque, along with other local stakeholders.
Local residents have called for the prompt dredging of the sanctuary to restore its depth and natural water flow. They have also urged the authorities to take effective measures to address the shortage of natural food.
