Nine more people died of dengue and 1,954 others were hospitalised across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning, raising the death toll this year to 316 and the total number of reported cases to 103,396.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest figures were recorded in the 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Tuesday.

A total of 5,784 dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals across the country, as the mosquito-borne disease continues to put pressure on the healthcare system.

Of the nine latest fatalities, three were reported from areas under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), while Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Khulna division recorded two deaths each. Chattogram and Mymensingh divisions reported one death each.

DGHS data showed that September was the deadliest month of the year so far, with 148 dengue-related deaths and 43,774 hospitalisations, the highest monthly figures recorded in 2026.

The country reported only five dengue deaths between January and May, followed by 13 in June, 36 in July and 43 in August. However, fatalities rose sharply in September, reflecting a significant deterioration in the dengue situation during the monsoon season.

The outbreak continued into October, with 62 deaths reported in the first 12 days of the month. The latest fatalities pushed the annual death toll to 316 as of October 13.

Dengue infections also witnessed a sharp increase in September, when 43,774 patients were hospitalised, compared with 20,536 in August.

During the first 12 days of October, another 21,822 dengue cases were reported, surpassing the total recorded throughout August.

The figures indicate that dengue transmission remained widespread in October, following the sharp rise in infections and deaths in September.

Dhaka division recorded the highest number of new cases in the 24 hours ending on October 12, according to DGHS data.

Meanwhile, the latest fatalities were reported across both Dhaka city corporations and several divisions outside the capital, highlighting the geographical spread of the outbreak.

With more than 103,000 hospitalisations and 316 deaths reported so far this year, dengue continues to pose a major public health challenge in Bangladesh.
