Dengue death toll hits 307 in country
Four more people have died from dengue in Bangladesh, while 2,167 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Monday, October 12, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
All four deaths were reported in areas under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), highlighting the continuing toll of the mosquito-borne disease in the capital. The latest fatalities have taken the country’s dengue death toll to 307 this year, according to the DGHS.
The number of dengue patients hospitalised this year has also crossed the 100,000 mark, reaching 101,442 by Monday morning.
Of them, 95,331 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, while 5,834 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals across the country, according to figures reported by The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune, citing the health authorities.
The latest daily hospital admissions were lower than the 2,193 patients recorded in the preceding 24-hour period until 8:00am on Sunday. However, the continued influx of patients and the rising annual death toll indicate that dengue remains a major public health concern.
Dhaka South accounts for all latest deaths
Dhaka South City Corporation recorded all four dengue deaths in the latest reporting period. The area has also recorded the highest cumulative number of dengue deaths this year, with 84 fatalities, according to figures published by Business Times Bangladesh on Monday. Khulna Division ranked second in cumulative deaths, with 63.
However, the available reports confirming Monday’s figures do not provide a complete area-wise breakdown of the 2,167 newly hospitalised patients.
Therefore, the location with the highest number of new infections during the latest 24-hour period cannot be established conclusively from those reports.
The figures cover patients admitted to hospitals between 8:00am on Sunday and 8:00am on Monday. They reflect hospital admissions rather than the total number of people infected, as not every dengue patient necessarily seeks hospital treatment.
The latest data comes amid a continued rise in the country’s cumulative dengue burden. With more than 101,000 hospital admissions and 307 deaths recorded since the beginning of the year, the disease continues to place pressure on healthcare facilities.
The DGHS publishes regular dengue updates to track new hospital admissions, deaths and the overall situation across Bangladesh.
