Amir Khosru unveils Walton Solar to expand clean energy, curb import costs
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday formally inaugurated an integrated solar energy ecosystem developed by technology giant Walton, praising the initiative as a benchmark for green industrial transformation that will curb Bangladesh’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and save valuable foreign currency.
Unveiled at a ceremony held at the Walton Corporate Office in Bashundhara, Dhaka, on Saturday, the “Walton Solar Ecosystem” incorporates rooftop and floating solar projects generating a total capacity of 32 megawatts (MW) across the company’s manufacturing facilities equivalent to the total electricity demand of a major district town.
In addition to meeting internal operational power needs, Walton feeds approximately 1,150 megawatt-hours (MWh) of surplus green electricity into the national grid annually through the net-metering framework.
Commending the initiative, the finance minister emphasized that solar power represents a cost-effective, environmentally friendly solution capable of transforming the country’s energy landscape over the next two years.
He noted that integrating solar energy directly into consumer electronics ranging from refrigerators and air conditioners to smart televisions and laundry appliances will lower household electricity bills while bolstering national energy security.
Walton Hi-Tech Industries PLC Chairman S M Shamsul Alam stated that the ecosystem will accelerate carbon emission reductions and support a self-reliant economy.
Vice-Chairman S M Ashraful Alam highlighted that combining captive power generation, grid feeds, and solar-compatible consumer appliances creates new commercial avenues for Walton while building long-term shareholder value.
Managing Director S M Mahbubul Alam added that Walton’s ambition extends beyond the “Made in Bangladesh” tag toward demonstrating indigenous high-tech innovation in international markets.
Technical officials explained that Walton’s hybrid solar appliances can run directly on solar energy during peak daylight hours without battery storage, automatically drawing supplementary power from the national grid when solar intensity drops.
Additionally, through Energy Storage System (ESS) technology, daytime solar generation can be stored in advanced battery units to power heavy household appliances overnight.
The company also showcased its Takyon e-bike series featuring intelligent backup battery systems that function as mobile energy storage, alongside UV-resistant photovoltaic solar cables engineered for heavy-duty industrial installations.
The inauguration was attended by Walton directors S M Rezaul Alam, S M Monjurul Alam Ovee, and Tahmina Afrose Tanna, alongside senior corporate executives.
