‘Playgrounds vital for future generations’
Emphasising the social importance of sports, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has said sports are not merely a means of entertainment but also a tool for building a healthy body and mind.
Ensuring adequate sports facilities for children, adolescents and young people can help build an effective defence against social problems such as drug addiction, terrorism and juvenile gangs, he said, adding that building playgrounds in every ward was an important investment in future generations.
The mayor made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony and discussion meeting marking the start of renovation work on Playground and Park No. 1 in Kalpalok Residential Area on Saturday. The programme was organised by the Kalpalok Residential Social Welfare Association (Phase 1) at the Kalpalok Model Mosque premises.
He said he had pledged to build playgrounds in every ward of the city after taking the oath of office as mayor. Accordingly, development and preparation work on 11 playgrounds had already been completed, while work on several others was underway.
He said several playgrounds, including Halishahar H Block Field, Halishahar Bahurupi Field, Ferozshah Field, Halishahar S Block Field (adjacent to B Block) and Halishahar BDR Field, had been developed and made suitable for sports.
The programme was presided over by M Abdus Shukkur, president of the Kalpalok Residential Social Welfare Association (Phase 1).
Chattogram-9 MP Abu Sufian attended as the main inaugurator, while Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Engineer Belayet Hossain inaugurated the renovation work.
Former joint convener of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP Anwar Hossain Lipu, local dignitaries and residents of the residential area were also present.
