Madaripur residents demand Shakuni Lake protection

Leaders of social organisations and concerned citizens have demanded the removal of illegal structures and measures to prevent water pollution to protect historic Shakuni Lake in Madaripur.

They made the demands at a human chain held on the lake’s bank in the town around 10am on Saturday. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner seeking effective measures to preserve the lake’s environment and natural beauty.

Representatives of 20 social organisations took part in the programme. Among the participants were Madaripur District Freedom Fighters’ Commander Habibul Alam, freedom fighter and physician Golam Sarwar, Conscious Citizens Committee President Khan Mohammad Shahid, Enayet Hossain Nannu, Advocate Mashiur Rahman Parvez, Baizid Mia, Kumar Lavlu, Jewel Chowdhury and Reza Haque.

Speakers said Shakuni Lake was an important symbol of Madaripur’s heritage and beauty. Once a popular destination for local residents and visitors, the lake is now facing environmental threats due to poor management, pollution and inadequate maintenance, they said.

Describing the lake as an integral part of the town’s history, heritage and civic life, they urged the authorities to identify and remove illegal structures along its banks and take effective steps to stop water pollution.

They warned that polluted water could harm the environment and biodiversity. They also called for stopping waste disposal into the lake, ensuring regular cleaning and identifying sources of pollution to prevent further deterioration.

The participants stressed the need for a long-term plan rather than temporary initiatives to protect the lake. They said the district administration, municipal authorities, environmental agencies, social organisations and local residents should work together to preserve it.

They expressed hope that prompt and coordinated action would help restore the lake’s natural beauty and ensure a clean, pollution-free environment for future generations.
