Speakers call to highlight Alema Khatun Bhasani’s legacy
Speakers at a programme in Tangail on Saturday called for Alema Khatun Bhasani’s life and ideals to be highlighted among the younger generation, with a demand to include her biography in school and college textbooks.
The call was made at a book launch, discussion meeting and prayer session marking the 25th death anniversary of Alema Khatun Bhasani, wife of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, at the Maulana Bhasani Darbar Hall in Santosh.
The programme, held at 10:00am on October 10, centred on the launch of Alema Khatun Bhasani, a book documenting her life and contributions.
State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam, the chief guest, said the spouses of many eminent personalities throughout history had played important roles in their success, and Maulana Bhasani’s life was no exception.
He said Alema Khatun Bhasani’s life and ideals offered valuable lessons for women in the country. By following her example, women could earn respect in society through their work, he said, urging people to introduce her life and principles to the younger generation. Shariful Alam also said many eminent figures in the country, including Maulana Bhasani, had not received the recognition they deserved.
The government led by Tarique Rahman would take initiatives to ensure due recognition for Maulana Bhasani and other distinguished personalities, he added.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, the chief speaker, described Alema Khatun Bhasani as an extraordinary woman who led a simple life despite being born into a zamindar family.
She stood beside Maulana Bhasani and supported him through difficult periods of his political life, he said, adding that her contribution was significant to Maulana Bhasani’s struggles for the rights of farmers, workers and other working people.
Speaking as a special guest, Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Shahidul Islam said women and men had both contributed to humanity’s noble achievements, referring to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s vision of their shared contributions.
He said Alema Khatun Bhasani had played an important role in supporting Maulana Bhasani’s movements to establish the rights of farmers, workers and ordinary people.
The vice-chancellor also said they would continue working to raise the university named after Maulana Bhasani and the research centre established in his name to international standards.
