Power cuts disrupt services at Ishwardi Hospital
Medical services at Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex in Pabna are being disrupted by frequent power outages and the absence of a generator.
During power cuts, doctors and nurses sometimes have to use their mobile phone flashlights to treat patients, adding to the suffering of patients and their attendants.
According to Dr Shovon Pal, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, power outages occur several times a day, with each interruption lasting between one and one and a half hours.
The 50-bed hospital provides outpatient services to around 600-700 patients and emergency treatment to 200-250 patients daily. In addition, approximately 70-80 patients remain admitted to the facility.
Dr Shovon Pal, said, “The absence of a generator creates difficulties in providing medical services whenever electricity goes out. We have to use flashlights, particularly during nighttime outages. Installing a generator at the hospital would help resolve much of the problem.”
The hospital is already struggling with an excessive patient load and shortages of doctors and other staff.
Frequent power cuts and the lack of a generator have further complicated the delivery of medical services.
Doctors and nurses face particular difficulties in providing necessary treatment during nighttime outages. Patients and their attendants also suffer increased discomfort during hot weather.
Meanwhile, allegations have also surfaced regarding the activities of brokers around the hospital. Patients reportedly face harassment when seeking diagnostic tests and collecting medicines.
