BD women’s team suffer 7wkts defeat in first ODI
Bangladesh women’s national cricket team suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Australia in their first ODI at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Friday.
After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh struggled to build momentum due to lack of partnerships as they managed just 166 in 49.4 overs, with Ritu Moni showing some fight lower down the order with 45 off 63.
Australia made light work of the chase, with Phoebe Litchfield top-scoring with a fluent 77 off 57 balls, including ten fours and a six as they reached 168-3 in 25.4 overs.
The left-handed batter formed an 89-run partnership with Ellyse Perry after debutant pacer Habiba Islam dismissed opener Georgia Voll (19) to claim her maiden ODI wicket.
Then Rabeya Khan took the prized wicket of Litchfield, and Habiba struck again in the middle overs to get Beth Mooney (13) caught at midwicket; but the visitors could not halt Australia’s progress.
Ellyse remained unbeaten on 26 off 45 and Annabel Sutherland made 25 off 26 to finish it off in style.
Earlier, the hosts took control early as Bangladesh lost their top order in the first ten overs, leaving them reeling at 34-3.
Bangladesh got off to a shaky start as Fargana Hoque fell on the very first delivery, edging off Megan Schutt, as Sharmin Sultana followed her in the next over when Schutt trapped her LBW to register her 150th ODI wicket.
Sharmin Akhter, who had shown promise, fell after scoring 24 off 26, caught by King off Anabell Sutherland. Sobhana Mostary managed only 2 runs off 17 balls before biting the dust, also to Sutherland.
Nigar Sultana Joty kept the scoreboard ticking with her fighting knock of 29 off 86, until Tahlia McGrathleigh got the better of her with an edge, leaving the scoreboard 83-5.
Then Ritu and Shorna Akter tried to rebuild their innings and brought up 100 runs for Bangladesh, but their partnership was eventually cut short when Georgia Wareham trapped Shorna LBW. Shorna returned after 21 off 50.
Ritu Moni continued to anchor the innings, adding crucial runs with Rabeya (11) and Nahid Akter (20) before being run out just five runs short of a half-century.
Annabel Sutherland picked up 4-30, and Schutt returned 2-19 for the hosts.
The second ODI is scheduled on Sunday at the same venue.
