Money changers allowed to sell up to $3,000 against travel entitlement

The revised facility is expected to give outbound travelers greater flexibility in buying foreign currency cash from money changers

Bangladesh Bank (BB) yesterday raised the amount of US dollar notes and coins that licensed money changers can sell to outgoing Bangladeshi nationals against their annual private travel entitlement to $3,000 at any one instance, up from the previous limit of $2,000.

The central bank issued a circular in this regard on Thursday, saying the decision was taken to facilitate the foreign exchange requirements of outgoing Bangladeshi nationals.

According to the circular issued by the Foreign Exchange Policy Department-2, licensed money changers may now sell up to US$3,000 (three thousand) in the form of US dollar notes and coins at any one instance, out of the applicable annual private travel entitlement of a traveller.

The balance of the applicable entitlement may be sold in the form of notes and coins denominated in other freely convertible or usable currencies, subject to the availability of the customer’s remaining travel entitlement.

Previously, under FE Circular No. 31, dated November 19, 2024, licensed money changers were permitted to sell foreign currency notes and coins up to US$2,000 to an outgoing Bangladeshi national against the annual private travel entitlement.

Bangladesh Bank said other provisions applicable to licensed money changers in this regard will remain unchanged.
