2 bank officials beaten, robbed of Tk34 lakh
Two officials of an Islami Bank agent banking outlet were seriously injured after four robbers allegedly attacked them with iron rods and snatched Tk34 lakh from them in broad daylight in Naogaon’s Raninagar upazila on Tuesday.
The incident took place in the afternoon near the tower by Paril Bridge on the Abadpukur-Adamdighi road.
The injured were identified as Md Najmul, 32, and Rasel, 28, officials of the Abadpukur Islami Bank agent branch.
Firoz Hossain, owner of the agent branch, said the two officials had withdrawn Tk30 lakh from Islami Bank’s Santahar branch before noon, as part of their regular banking activities.
They added another Tk4 lakh of their own funds, taking the total amount to Tk34 lakh, and left Santahar for Abadpukur on a motorcycle.
When they reached the tower area near Paril Bridge, four helmeted men riding two motorcycles blocked their way, Firoz said.
Before the officials could react, the robbers allegedly attacked them with iron rods and seriously injured them. They then snatched the bag containing the money and fled the scene on their motorcycles.
Local residents later rescued the injured officials and took them to a hospital for treatment.
Md Zakaria Mondol, officer-in-charge of Raninagar Police Station, said police were sent to the scene after receiving information about the robbery.
He said an operation was underway to identify and arrest those involved and recover the stolen money.
Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the movement of the bank officials and the robbery, he added.
