2,035 held in anti-teen-gang raids in Cumilla

Police have detained 363 people in the fifth round of an ongoing anti-teen-gang drive in Cumilla, taking the total number detained in five rounds to 2,035.

During the latest operation, the District Detective Branch (DB) also arrested Ratan, the prime accused in the 2022 killing of teenager Shahadat and alleged leader of the “Ratan Group” teen gang.

The four-hour joint operation was conducted by district police and the DB from 7pm to midnight on Friday across areas under 18 police stations, including the Cumilla metropolitan area. Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman disclosed the information on Saturday.

He said the operation targeted areas affected by teen gang activities, crime-prone locations and youth hangouts. Police are verifying whether those detained were involved in criminal activities.

Those against whom no specific allegations are found will be released, while legal action will be taken against others.

In the previous four rounds, police detained 624, 254, 415 and 379 people, respectively. With the latest 363 detentions, the total has reached 2,035.

Touhidul Anwar, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, said police detained 59 people from different crime-prone areas of the city. He said such operations are being conducted regularly to prevent teenagers from becoming involved in crime.

He added that police are maintaining strict monitoring to ensure that innocent people are not harassed and urged parents to remain vigilant to prevent juvenile crime.

Meanwhile, DB officials arrested Ratan in connection with Shahadat’s murder. Police said he faces several cases, including murder and arms charges, and had been under surveillance for some time.

Shahadat was killed in 2022 during a clash between the “Eagle Group” and “Ratan Group” in front of Cumilla Missionary School over establishing dominance. Ratan was named the prime accused in the murder case filed over the incident.

District police said anti-teen-gang operations will continue regularly to curb juvenile crime in Cumilla.
