DSCC installs 200 dustbins at DU
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has installed 200 dustbins on the Dhaka University campus as it launched a special cleanliness and mosquito-control drive across all 75 wards of the capital under its weekly “Cleaning Day” programme.
DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam called on Dhaka University students to take an active role in keeping the city clean and raising awareness about pollution and cleanliness.
He made the call while speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the weekly “Cleaning Day” and special cleanliness and anti-mosquito drive at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) area of Dhaka University on Saturday morning.
Abdus Salam said Dhaka University had historically guided the nation through critical and challenging periods and urged its teachers and students to take the lead in controlling pollution.
, spreading awareness and developing a culture of community cleanups.
Maintaining cleanliness at important national locations, including the Shaheed Minar, TSC and Shahbagh, was a collective responsibility, he said.
The DSCC administrator said the city corporation had installed 200 dustbins on the DU campus to strengthen cleanliness efforts. He added that additional cleaners would be deployed if necessary.
The programme was organised as part of a special cleanliness campaign held every Saturday to prevent dengue during the peak season under the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Alongside cleaning activities, the programme included tree plantation, distribution of fogger machines and mosquito-eradication operations.
After the inauguration, an awareness rally began from TSC and ended at the foot of the Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture near the Arts Faculty building.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam attended the programme as the special guest. General students led by DU unit Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon also took part.
A separate awareness rally was held in Mugda as part of the Cleaning Day programme. DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam attended as chief guest, while State Minister for Railway Ministry and Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid Habib was present as special guest.
Following the rally, the guests inspected the Manda Canal near Wasa Road and joined a special cleanliness and mosquito-control drive. They later planted trees on the premises of Haidar Ali School and College.
As part of the weekly “Cleaning Day” programme, cleanliness drives, mosquito-control operations and public awareness rallies were conducted simultaneously across all 75 wards of DSCC.
Regional Executive Officers led the programmes with the participation of local leaders and residents. Mosquito repellents were sprayed, waste was removed and other sanitation activities were carried out in different areas during the drives.
