Law minister highlights judicial reforms at UN crime congress

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has called for stronger international cooperation alongside robust national measures to combat existing and emerging transnational crimes.

He made the remarks while addressing a high-level session of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, according to an official release issued here on Sunday.

Asaduzzaman is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the congress, which is being held at the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi from September 26 to October 1.

The law minister highlighted Bangladesh’s ongoing judicial reforms and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law, expanding access to justice, enhancing institutional accountability and modernising the criminal justice system under the leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

He underscored Bangladesh’s efforts to address existing and emerging transnational crimes through robust national measures combined with international cooperation.

Asaduzzaman said Bangladesh had reaffirmed its commitment to reforming the Code of Criminal Procedure in line with the Abu Dhabi Declaration.

The proposed reform would seek to strengthen and expand the effective use of summary trials, expedite the disposal of cases, reduce case backlogs and ensure timely and equitable access to justice, he said.
