DNCC steps up drives for hawker-free footpaths, dengue control
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is working to ensure hawker-free footpaths for safe and hassle-free movement while strengthening efforts to keep the city clean and dengue-free, said DNCC Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a dengue mosquito larvae destruction and weekly cleanliness campaign at Manik Mia Avenue in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Saturday.
Volunteers from the Red Crescent and BD Clean, along with residents of Tejgaon, Mohammadpur, Indira Road and Rajabazar, participated in the programme. The DNCC administrator said the city corporation had been conducting the special cleanliness and awareness campaign every Saturday for the past three months.
DNCC health officials and magistrates are also conducting drives at government buildings, residential premises and abandoned places to identify and destroy Aedes mosquito larvae, he said. Khan urged residents to keep their homes and business establishments clean to help prevent the spread of dengue.
He said the number of dengue patients in the DNCC area was currently comparatively low, with around 80 patients receiving treatment at different hospitals.
The number of dengue cases could be brought down to zero through joint awareness efforts by residents and the city corporation, he said.
The administrator also said DNCC was regularly holding discussions with local housing societies, owners’ associations and business organisations to implement the government’s 90-day special programme.
Khan said the footpath in front of Hope Market in Ward 10, which had remained illegally occupied for a long time, had been successfully reclaimed.
Such drives to reclaim occupied footpaths would continue for public convenience, he said.
He said monitoring teams comprising local residents, the city corporation and traffic police had been formed to prevent the footpaths from being reoccupied.
The DNCC administrator sought cooperation from the media and people from all walks of life in the overall development of the city and mosquito-control activities.
DNCC officials were present at the programme.
