RAKUB gets new chairman

Prof Md Rafiqul Islam, a noted economist and retired professor of the University of Rajshahi, has joined Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) as chairman.

He assumed office on Thursday following a notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.

Prof Islam has made significant contributions to higher education and research in Bangladesh. Alongside his long academic career in economics, he has held key administrative positions at several universities and institutions.

He began his professional career as a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Rajshahi on February 10, 1977.

After serving the university as a teacher and rising to the rank of professor, he served as vice-chancellor of Islamic University, Kushtia, from 2004 to 2006.

He also served as a council member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, chairman of the Association of Universities of Bangladesh, and a member of the Senate and Syndicate of the University of Rajshahi.

Born in 1950 in Telihara village under Shekherkola Union of Bogura Sadar upazila, Prof Islam completed his honours degree in economics from the University of Rajshahi in 1970 and his master’s degree in 1971.
