Jamaat could not do it, BNP has done it: AG
Attorney General (AG) Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal, the chief law officer of the state, has said that what Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami could not do while in opposition, the BNP leadership has been able to accomplish.
He said Jamaat leader and Satkhira-4 constituency MP Gazi Nazrul Islam was expelled from the party but was not asked to resign from Parliament. Despite being accused of committing a serious offence, Gazi Nazrul Islam did not resign as an MP, he said.
“In contrast, BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman asked a lawmaker from his party to resign, and reserved women’s seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misty has resigned. Jamaat failed to do so, while the ruling BNP has been able to take such action,” the attorney general said.
He made the remarks on Thursday while responding to journalists’ questions about the resignation of BNP reserved women’s seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misty.
The attorney general said the prime minister, as head of the government, had dealt with the matter accordingly. Despite being a member of the ruling party, no leniency was shown towards Ferdousi Ahmed Misty, he added.
Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman had ordered Ferdousi Ahmed Misty to resign following an incident involving an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Health Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka. She subsequently submitted her resignation.
