Bangladesh reach semis of Asian games cricket

Bangladesh have advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games Cricket competition.

Yesterday’s scheduled quarter-final match against Malaysia was called off due to rain at Korogi Sports Park in Nagoya, Japan .

Consequently, despite not a single ball being bowled, Bangladesh secured a spot in the ‘ Last Four’ by virtue of their higher ranking compared to Malaysia.

The cancellation was anticipated due to the persistent light rain in Nagoya since the morning.

Although the match between Bangladesh and Malaysia was scheduled to start at 11.00am BST, the organisers announced the cancellation three and a half hours in advance.

Regarding this, Bangladesh team Manager Nafees Iqbal said, “There were concerns that the match wouldn’t take place due to the rain since morning, and that is exactly what happened.

Once the organizers confirmed the cancellation, we didn’t need to go to the field.”

Earlier in the day, the third quarter-final match between Sri Lanka and Nepal was also called off for the same reason.

Earlier, the quarter-final matches between Pakistan and Hong Kong, as well as India and Afghanistan, were also cancelled.

Bangladesh will face Pakistan in the semi-final on October 1. India and Sri Lanka will compete in the other semi-final.

Bangladesh won the gold medal in men’s cricket at the 2010 Asian Games, marking the country’s greatest achievement in the event to date.

The men’s cricket team subsequently won silver in Incheon (2014) and bronze in Hangzhou (2023).
