Police member arrested with 1,790 yaba tablets

Police have arrested a police constable in charge of the drug destruction section at the holding cell of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka, with 1,790 yaba tablets. The arrested man is Md. Rezaul Karim (45), a constable in the CMM court’s exhibit disposal section. (The headline says 1,700, but the report itself gives 1,790.)

The information came from DMP’s prosecution department on Monday. He was arrested around on Sunday in the Sutrapur police station area of the capital, where 1,790 yaba tablets were seized from him.

DMP Inspector Md. Kamruzzaman filed a case as complainant at Sutrapur police station on Monday. The prosecution department said an application may be made to take Rezaul into remand for questioning.

According to the case’s first information report (FIR), a special operations team of CID Dhaka Metro-South acted on a tip-off and raided Bismillah Biryani Ghar in Ward 28 under Sutrapur police station. Rezaul Karim was detained when he tried to flee.

A search of his body then recovered 1,790 yaba tablets, weighing 179 grams, from his trouser pocket. The estimated illegal market value of the tablets is Tk 5.37 lakh. Tk 5,500 in cash from drug sales and a Vivo smartphone were also seized.

The FIR states that the recovered yaba, cash and mobile phone were seized as evidence. A case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
