BD proposes broader trade, investment ties with China’s Yunnan

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir proposes stronger Bangladesh-Yunnan trade, investment, connectivity and technology cooperation.

Bangladesh has proposed a wide-ranging set of initiatives to deepen trade, investment, energy, and technology cooperation with China’s Yunnan Province, including the establishment of a direct 1,200-kilometre road corridor connecting Chattogram to Kunming via Myanmar.

The proposal was presented by Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir during a bilateral meeting with a high-level delegation from Yunnan Province, led by Executive Vice Governor Zhao Junmin, at the Commerce Ministry secretariat in Dhaka.

Minister Muktadir highlighted that an operational road link running from Chattogram through Myanmar to Kunming could slash cargo transportation time between the regions to roughly 24 hours.

He noted that such connectivity would significantly reduce logistics costs while strengthening regional trade and supply chain integration across Bangladesh, Myanmar, and southwestern China.

Pointing to Yunnan’s consumer base of 46.4 million people, Muktadir identified the province as an untapped, lucrative destination for Bangladeshi exports and urged the quick operationalization of proposed bonded warehouse and exhibition infrastructure in Yunnan to facilitate direct market entry for domestic goods.

Official data shared at the meeting revealed that bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Yunnan surpassed 1.3 billion yuan in 2025.

In response, Yunnan Executive Vice Governor Zhao Junmin affirmed that Bangladesh is the first South Asian country included under Yunnan’s special trade facilitation policy.

He confirmed that bonded warehousing, dedicated customs clearance, and exhibition venues are being arranged following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Yunnan’s commerce department and the Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh.

He mentioned that a site has already been selected in Yunnan to showcase Bangladeshi products and these facilities will be operationalized soon, calling on Bangladeshi exporters to actively utilize the trade framework.

Both sides also agreed to explore expanding direct cargo air connectivity, particularly linking Bangladesh’s northeastern region with Yunnan to create fresh opportunities for trade in perishable agricultural items.

Key export items identified from Bangladesh include jute and jute goods, leather products, frozen seafood, and fresh fruits, while imports from Yunnan will focus on flowers, chemical fertilizers, and livestock feed.
