3 siblings die in Meghna trawler capsize

Three siblings who went missing after a trawler capsized in the Meghna River in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj on Thursday were found dead on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Samina, 17, Sajib, 24, and Samin, 5. Their father, Helal Uddin, who also went missing in the accident, remains untraced.

Divers from the Fire Service recovered the bodies from the Meghna River near Al Mostafa Factory in the Boidderbazar area between 2:55am and 8:10am on Saturday, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of Narayanganj Fire Service.

“Search operations are underway to rescue the remaining missing person,” he said.
Mohammad Zahed Chowdhury, station master of Sonargaon Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, said the trawler sank around 1:30pm on Thursday amid stormy weather.

Following the accident, divers launched a rescue operation at around 4:50pm and continued searching until 3am. The operation resumed at 7am on Saturday.

Underwater cameras and other search methods were used during the operation, he said.

Shah Kamal, inspector and in-charge of the Boidderbazar Naval Police Outpost, said the trawler was carrying 14 passengers, along with two cows and a goat, from Homna upazila of Cumilla when it sank in the Meghna River during a storm.

The passengers were returning from the wedding of Sajia Akter and Shishir in Haria area of Boidderbazar.

Earlier, a woman identified as Rashida was also found dead. Four people, including Helal Uddin and his three children, had initially remained missing.
