Jahangirnagar University gets new VC

Professor Dr Md Nurul Islam of the Department of Geography and Environment has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU).

The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued a notification in this regard on Saturday (26 September), signed by its Assistant Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed.

According to the notification, Professor Nurul Islam was appointed under Section 11(1) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973, with the approval of the President and Chancellor.

He previously served as the vice-chancellor of Dhaka Central University and has been relieved of that post following his new appointment.

Under the terms of his appointment, Professor Nurul Islam will serve as vice-chancellor for four years from the date of his joining the post or until his retirement, whichever comes earlier. He will receive the salary, allowances and other benefits prescribed by the relevant rules.

The notification added that, as the university’s chief executive, the new vice-chancellor will be required to reside on the campus full-time. The President and Chancellor may cancel the appointment at any time, if necessary.

Meanwhile, Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan has been relieved of his post as Vice-Chancellor of JU under Section 11(2) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973.

The notification said he was relieved with the approval of the president and chancellor. However, he has been allowed to return to his substantive post as a professor in the Department of Philosophy.
