CPB office under attack, 2 activists beaten in Dhaka

Two activists of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) were beaten and the party’s central office in Purana Paltan was besieged by a group of attackers on Monday night over allegations that CPB activists had chanted the slogan “Joy Bangla” during a procession.

CPB leaders alleged that the attackers identified themselves as leaders and activists of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, the youth and student wings of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The attack began around 10:00pm, with the attackers staying in front of the party office for about an hour and chanting various slogans. Police later arrived and rescued the two beaten activists.

Earlier, CPB activists had brought out a procession following the release of Dipak Shil, former president of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union.

He had been detained while attempting to hold a human chain in Dhanmondi to protest against female Baul singers being prevented from performing in Sunamganj.

Police were deployed in front of the CPB’s central office, while several party activists remained nearby.
