Appreciation of Taka against USD happens after 5 and a half years
Bangladesh’s Taka strengthened by around 0.06 percent against the dollar between June 2025 and June 2026 marking an end of a continuous depreciation trend spanning five and a half years, even as the Indian, Sri Lankan and South Korean currencies fell 10-11 percent , according to the latest Bangladesh Bank.
According to a Bangladesh Bank (BB) report released on Sunday,on a point-to-point basis from June last year to June this year, the value of the Taka appreciated by 0.06 percent.
Furthermore, between August 30 and September 17, the local currency strengthened by 0.77 percent against the greenback.
Officials credit record remittances of $35.5 billion and central bank interventions, buying $6 billion without selling reserves.
Central bank data shows that the Taka experienced an unbroken streak of depreciation against the US dollar from 2021 until September 17 this year.
During this period, the exchange rate surged from Tk 85.80 per dollar to a record high of Tk123.95-reflecting a devaluation of Tk38.20, or 45.05 percent.
The central bank noted that after a prolonged period of weakening, the Bangladeshi Taka has shifted to a relatively stronger position.
Correspondingly, central bank’s “Exchange Rate and Foreign Exchange Market Dynamics” data shows several Asian countries have faced significant depreciation against the US dollar, the Bangladeshi taka has been an exception. Between June 2025 and June 2026, the South Korean won lost around 11 percent of its value.
The data were sourced from the central banks of the respective countries, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Financial Statistics (IFS).
During the same period, the Indian and Sri Lankan rupees depreciated by around 10 percent each, and the Indonesian rupiah lost around 9 percent.
Data from the Reserve Bank of India meanwhile show that the Indian rupee depreciated by around 10 percent against the dollar between June 2025 and June this year. Over the past year, the rupee’s lowest exchange rate against the dollar was 87.60 rupees.
Its value fell to as low as 97 rupees amid the continued depreciation. But the dollar was trading at around 96 rupees in India on Sunday.
Among Asian countries, Indonesia’s currency also depreciated by around 9 percent against the dollar over the year, while Vietnam’s currency lost around 1 percent of its value. The depreciation of the Singapore dollar and Cambodian riel was comparatively small.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $36.31 billion, according to the latest data released by the Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Sunday.
The central bank said that under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM-6) accounting standard, the country’s reserves were recorded at $31.45 billion.
