Titas-28 starts adding 12-13mmcfd gas

Gas production from the newly drilled Titas-28 well was officially inaugurated on Saturday, with the well expected to add 12 to 13 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMCFD) to the national grid.

The additional gas is expected to help ease the country’s running energy crisis and support operations in the industrial and power sectors.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resource Anindya Islam Amit as the chief guest formally inaugurated gas production from the well.

Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal, MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce, and Md. Ziaul Hoque, Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, attended the ceremony as special guests.

Under a contract signed on April 10, 2025, with Chinese integrated drilling contractor CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Ltd. (CCDC), drilling of the Titas-28 well was carried out under the “4 Evaluation-cum-Development Wells Drilling Project at Titas and Kamta Fields.”

Drilling of the well began on December 15, 2025, and was completed on June 19, 2026.
The well was drilled to a depth of 3,601 metres in measured depth (MD) and 3,471 metres in true vertical depth (TVD).

Following completion of drilling, Drill Stem Testing (DST) and production testing were conducted.
The total cost of completing the Titas-28 well was approximately Tk 200 crore, including VAT and income tax.

After the inauguration, the State Minister and other dignitaries visited the ongoing deep exploration drilling operations at the Titas-31 and Titas-29 wells.

Officials said Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) currently operates six gas fields – Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna and Kamta – which together account for around 30 percent of domestic gas production and 18 percent of the country’s total gas supply.

As part of the government’s plan to drill 150 wells, BGFCL is implementing five ongoing projects aimed at adding approximately 106.5 MMCFD of gas to the national grid by 2030 through six new wells and eight workovers.

In addition, plans are in place to drill nine more new wells and carry out 12 workovers, which are expected to contribute another 126 MMCFD of gas.

Under its master plan, BGFCL aims to add nearly 235 MMCFD of gas from 19 wells by 2035.

To identify prospective sites for future projects, BGFCL is conducting 3D seismic surveys covering 1,450 square kilometres across the Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi and Meghna fields.

It is also conducting 2D and 3D seismic surveys covering 632 square kilometres in the northwest of the Titas field and northeast of the Narsingdi field.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Petrobangla and BGFCL were present at the event.
